YANG Yungui MAE is a professor at Beijing Institute of Genomics (BIG), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China National Center for Bioinformation (CNCB). Dr YANG received his BS degree in Microbiology from Fudan University in 1995 and PhD degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, CAS in 2000 with Dr. YANG Shengli. He performed his postdoctoral research in the laboratories of Dr WANG Zhaoqi (International Agency for Research on Cancer-IARC, 2000-2003) and Dr Tomas Lindahl (Clare Hall Laboratories, 2005-2008). He had served as a staff scientist at IARC from 2003-2005.

He joined in the BIG CAS as a Principle Investigator in 2008. He was appointed as the Director of the BIG CAS in 2023 and as the Project Chief Scientist of the CNCB in 2021. His research interest is to dissect the roles and biological significance of RNA modification (i.e. N6-methyladenosine-m6A, 5-methylcytosine-m5C). He has been involved in the discovery of reversible RNA methylation and its important physiological function regulation and pathological effects. The series of achievements “RNA methylation epitranscriptomics” was selected into the series of “Frontiers of Basic Research in China”. He was elected as Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea in 2020.
