Neeme Tõnisson is a Professor of Clinical Genetics and group leader in the Institute of Genomics, Univ. of Tartu / Estonian Biobank and is also a practicing clinical geneticist in two Estonian hospitals. He is coordinating the return of monogenic findings for the research participants in Estonian Biobank. He is also the current elected president of Estonian Society of Human Genetics and the board member of Estonian Medical Association.
Dr. Tõnisson has graduated from the medical faculty in University of Tartu in 1995 and has there defended his PhD thesis on microarray-based molecular diagnostics in 2003. His postdoc studies were performed in German Cancer Research Centre, DKFZ, in Heidelberg, Germany. He has been leading the molecular diagnostics unit in Tartu University Hospital from 2008 to 2012. In recent years, he has actively participated in national precision medicine programme in Estonia and has supported a number of startup companies for establishing healthcare-oriented genetic services.
His professional interests are related to the personalized medicine, application of genomics in disease prevention, understanding the genetic findings in population level.
